Ownership and Regulation

How many organisations own national newspapers and do any companies own more than one title? If so, are these titles linked together?

The Daily Mail – backed Conservative/Lib Dem

Owned by Viscount Rothemere via DMG Media

DMG Media, formerly Associated Newspapers, is a national newspaper and website publisher in the UK. It is a subsidiary of DMGT. The group was established in 1905 and is currently based at Northcliffe House in Kensington. DMG Media is a leading multi-channel consumer media company which is home to some of the UK’s most popular brands, including the Daily Mail, MailOnline, The Mail on Sunday, Metro, Wowcher, Jobsite and Jobrapido.
The Guardian – backed Labour

Owned by the Scott Trust Limited

‘Guardian Media Group plc (often referred to as GMG) is a British mass media company owning various media operations including The Guardian and The Observer. The group is wholly owned by Scott Trust Limited, which exists to secure the financial and editorial independence of The Guardian in perpetuity.
Which companies own regional newspaper titles? Look at newspapers that you may be familiar with such as The Leicester Mercury.

Leicester Mercury is owned Trinity Mirror plc. Trinity Mirror plc is the largest British newspaper, magazine and digital publisher after purchasing rival Local World for £220 million, in October 2015. It is Britain's biggest newspaper group, publishing 240 regional papers as well as the national Daily MirrorSunday Mirror and People, and the Scottish Sunday Mail and Daily Record. Since purchasing Local World in November 2015, it has gained 83 print publications.

Do any of these companies own other media outlets? How does this link to Hesmondhalgh's ideas on Cultural Industries?

DMG Media, who own Daily Mail, also own other newspaper like The Mail On Sunday and Metro. But, they also own other things like Wowcher.

Trinity Mirror own 240 regional newspapers as well as big national newspapers like the Daily Mirror. These kind of link to the Hesmondhalgh's idea that cultural production is owned by a few conglomerates who vertically integrate across a range of media.

Why do you think ownership is something to be concerned about in the UK? Use Curran and Seaton's Power and Media Industries to explore this idea in your post.

I think it is important that a range of companies own different newspapers so that everyone gets a range of views from different ideologies. Otherwise, everyone would be brainwashed into believing in one superior view/idealogy and no-one would be able to have a different opinion because that company would own all the biggest national newspapers.

Story-boarding: Introduction: The introduction to my music video will be set on the beach in the evening. The first shot is a birds eye view of the sea crashing on to the beach with words like the artists and the song title. It will turn in to a series of shots of exoctic places and activities in different locations , to go with the 'live in the moment' type story. During the song, there are parts where the voice is the main focus. This is where I plan to have extreme close ups of lips miming the lyrics of the song. This will not only show a variation in shot selection, but will also make a connection between the video and the song. The storyboard sketches are just some ideas that I have in mind, but might not make it to the video. All the shots in the photo are inspired by other dance music videos that have a similar atmosphere that I want to partially replicate.

Evaluate My Initial Footage

Framing -  We think that our shot is framed well. Our actor is in the centre of the frame and the backdrop is fairly accurate against the original. Our shot could be improved by having the actor further away so that he is smaller in the frame and his knees are at the bottom. The professional shit is successful because it has a good use of contrast with the shadows and the outfit is clearly shown with a contrast between the shirt and skirt. Lighting -  Our lighting works fairly well, however it is slightly brighter than the original. We relied on ambient lighting which may have been too harsh with the halogen lights. The original appears to have relied on ambient lighting of the sun fairly late in the day through a window. The professional shot may have used their lighting in order to make the subject stand out by making the background darker. Mise en scene -  Our costume is fairly close to the original with the skirt and check shirt. The shirt ...
