American Beauty - Scene Analysis

Representation

Lester is represented as a submissive and pathetic person, this is shown through his hunched over posture and the way he always obeys to whatever his wife tells him to do. This is the complete opposite to his wife who is a very loud and tumultuous person. She is seen as the master at the table whereas it would usually be the father of the family. However, she has to be quite caring as she took a lot of time preparing a big meal for her family. Then there is Jane, who seems to be the most collected out of all the family, even though she is stereotypical confused and delusional teenager.

Mise En Scene

The mise en scene in this scene from American Beauty is used to express the personalities of the family. For instance, Lester is wearing very bland clothes, much like the interior of the house, which shows that his life is boring and repetitive. It could also show that he blends in with the house as if he is not there, which would make sense as he stated at the start of the film that he is going to die soon. The same cannot be said for Carolyn who wears a vibrant blue silk material, which shows she is much more loud person. Then there is Jane, who is wearing a jumper which has roses on it which is a reference to the title of the film, as american beauty is a type of rose.
In this scene lighting is used to keep Jane well lit but both parents are in the shadows as if they non-existent. This could represent how their relationship is becoming increasingly distant.

Sound

This scene starts with the famous Bali Ha'i from the musical South Pacific. As this song was chosen by Carolyn it could show that she is classic in her taste and perhaps misses the past. The music then changes to  non-diegetic music which has this repetitive and quite creepy atmosphere to it. This change comes when the stranger outside is first seen, and so perhaps the music correlates to the creepy actions of the person.

Camerawork

Throughout the whole scene, there is an unnoticeable zoom, this could be used to show how we are intruding on their conversation. There is also cross-cutting between the shot-reverse shot / the two shot of Lester and Jane and the stranger in the bushes. There is also an extreme close-up on the stranger to show his murderous looks.

Comments

  1. A decent first analysis. You make some perceptive comments and have used terminology correctly. Good work Will.

Story-boarding: Introduction: The introduction to my music video will be set on the beach in the evening. The first shot is a birds eye view of the sea crashing on to the beach with words like the artists and the song title. It will turn in to a series of shots of exoctic places and activities in different locations , to go with the 'live in the moment' type story. During the song, there are parts where the voice is the main focus. This is where I plan to have extreme close ups of lips miming the lyrics of the song. This will not only show a variation in shot selection, but will also make a connection between the video and the song. The storyboard sketches are just some ideas that I have in mind, but might not make it to the video. All the shots in the photo are inspired by other dance music videos that have a similar atmosphere that I want to partially replicate.

Comparison of Two National Newspapers (The Guardian and Daily Mail)

The Berliner or Compact Format (The Guardian) The Guardian was once a broadsheet newspaper, also known as 'the quality press ', due to the more serious approach that it took compared to other popular tabloids . But due to printing costs, The Guardian has now took on the berliner format. Because of these changes, people have said that the ' quality press ' has turned into more like the popular press .  In the cover of The Guardian you can expect to see much more text (' copy ') than in a tabloid paper. This shows that they put a lot more detail into their splash , probably to try and keep the ' quality press ' reputation that they have. The Guardian is a left wing paper. This means that they usually represent the socialist ideology , which is supporting the distribution of wealth and resources in society. The agenda for their stories focus on economics, politics and 'hard news'. The Tabloid (Daily Mail) The Daily Mail takes...

Evaluate My Initial Footage

Framing -  We think that our shot is framed well. Our actor is in the centre of the frame and the backdrop is fairly accurate against the original. Our shot could be improved by having the actor further away so that he is smaller in the frame and his knees are at the bottom. The professional shit is successful because it has a good use of contrast with the shadows and the outfit is clearly shown with a contrast between the shirt and skirt. Lighting -  Our lighting works fairly well, however it is slightly brighter than the original. We relied on ambient lighting which may have been too harsh with the halogen lights. The original appears to have relied on ambient lighting of the sun fairly late in the day through a window. The professional shot may have used their lighting in order to make the subject stand out by making the background darker. Mise en scene -  Our costume is fairly close to the original with the skirt and check shirt. The shirt ...
